VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava Central Library

What is in the Library

The Central Library offers access to a wide range of resources to support teaching, learning and research at VŠB-TU of Ostrava. Our stock consists of some 400,000 items (books, periodicals, standards, theses and dissertation, and other material). These traditional services are complemented by a rapidly growing "Electronic Library" of online information resources delivered via the Internet and accessible through this website.

Details of a significant part of books in our collection are found in our online library catalogue external link. For earlier documents card catalogues must be checked. Card catalogues in the Circulation Department hold details of some pre-1995 books. Books are located either in library stores, or on open shelves. On the shelves books are arranged according to subject using the Universal Decimal Classification system (maintained by UDC Consortium external link; the Library uses its Czech version: České MDT Online external link).

Always use the catalogue to track down books.

Our journals (also called periodicals, magazines or serials) are for reference use in the library only – they are non-borrowable. To find out if the library takes the one you require, you will need to use the periodicals search option on the library catalogue, or check the lists of journals (2016–2017 subscriptions only). You can make photocopies of articles you need or make an electronic copy using the library services. Current journals can be found in the library study rooms arranged alphabetically by title on the shelves, older volumes are available in Circulation Department only.

Rare books collection

The library stock contains an archival collection of rare (old prints) and older books and periodicals, acquired by purchase and gift, during the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century by the Mining Academy in Pribram. The main subject areas of the collection are geology, mining, physics, chemistry, mathematics and metallurgy. The oldest book in this historical collection is Georgii Agricolae De re metallica libri XII from 1561. These books and periodicals can be consulted in the library on request. A permission of the University Librarian is necessary for old prints (books printed before 1801).

The library maintains a collection of Czech Standards external link. These are for use in the library only. Photocopying of them is not permitted. The Library also provides access to electronic versions of Czech Standards (ČSN online ikona: externí odkaz available on dedicated PCs in study rooms only).

Foreign and international standards available in our stocks may be borrowed. Details of them are in the library catalogue. They can be searched for in the same way as any other printed books.

University theses and dissertations

Theses and dissertations produced by VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava staff and students are kept in the library's Circulation Department (either on open shelves in the study room or in the library store) and may not be borrowed. Records for all theses and dissertations available in the study room are on the separate library's online catalogue: DSpace at VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava external link.
